  • Why do people use stereotypes?
  • What is the impact of negative stereotypes?

DISCUSS

gender & sexuality representation in media

The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.

ANALYSIS: VALUES - IDENTITY - ACTIONS

Example

As you can see, it's important to be critical viewers of media. To help us look deeply at representations in the media, in the next page you will examine texts in terms of Values, Identities and Actions.

ACTIONS

This scene can encourage a viewer to believe that bi-sexuality does not exist based on the way the characters, who appear as members of the LBGTQ2+ community, joke about it. It effectively works at erasing this identity by discounting it, which could make bisexual individuals question their own sense of self.

Representation offers a visualization of what it means to be queer. While it may not always map onto lived experience, queer media icons can offer a sense of a life that exists beyond social structures.
