- A long narrative: Beowulf contains 3,182 lines. The :Monster's Mother" contains about 95 lines. It is about Beowulf taking revenge on Grendell and his mother for killing his fellowmen. - Super human characteristics: In lines 635-638, Beowulf lifted and used a sword hammered by the giants and even shattered the chains on it. He was even able to breathe underwater which a normal hero can't do, showing that Beowulf is a "super-human". -Struggle Between Good and Evil: Even though Beowulf is tired, he still decided to get revenge on his fellowmen who died, wanting to end all the evil that was left.

1. Five features of an epic poem found in Beowulf

An epic poem is a lengthy, narrative work of poetry. These long poems typically detail extraordinary feats and adventures of characters from a distant past.

-Presented in a serious tone: The entire poem was written in old English which gave it a more poetic mood to Beowulf. The words used to describe it were raw but used very well. In lines 633-645, it was very descriptive about the monster's mother's death. And after these lines, it was descriptive about how Beowulf felt and his thought processes. -Hero represents common values: Beowulf took revenge for his fellowmen by killing Grendell and someone close to him as revenge. Revenge was a very common thing for men to do in those days and he would be respected for doing that

He has supernatural powers E.g- being able to breathe underwater and picking up and using a massive sword in combat. Bravery E.g- He confidently go against the monster’s mother Loyalty E.g- He fought and brought back the monster’s mother head for king hrothgar Lasting Fame E,g- He killed the monster’s mother and many other monsters for fame.

An epic hero is the main character of an epic poem that tells the story of a grand quest in which they use their extraordinary or superhuman abilities to achieve great things.

Kenning: Heaven’s own Candle - The Sun Ring-woven mail- Chain mail or Armour Alliteration: The iron sang its fierce song, Sang Beowulf’s strength - This represents that his sword was making a lot of sounds because of how strong he was. Strongest of soldiers - To emphasize the power or strength of the soldiers Allusion: Who’d ruled those for half a hundred years - With this you can infer that Grendel’s Mother is extremely old and it pushes the point that she is a monster, with her unhuman-like lifespan. Discovered that no sword could slice her evil skin - This depicts how immoral or unholy her power or strength was. Symbol: She-wolf - It shows that she is monstrous and acts wild as a beast; like a wolf. A brilliant light burned all around him, the lake itself like a fiery flame- It is representing hell with fire encompassing them.

A literary device is a tool used by writers to hint at larger themes, ideas, and meaning in a story or piece of writing.

In the Poem Beowulf many characters must confront an enemy that could lead to their death with that being said this leads to my next theme. Theme 2:death Death is also seen as a major theme in "The Monsters Mother".This whole scene started out with Beowulf jumping into a lake to achieve his one and only goal.To find,battle and to be the cause of Grendel's mothers death which he later succeeded not only that but the monsters mother also wanted to use the death of Beowulf as a way to avenge the death of her only son but sadly she failed.These points were stated in lines 622-623 and 653-659.This shows that death is seen to be a major theme

THEME 1: Revenge Definition-Revenge is an action of inflicting harm or damage on someone else in retaliation for harm or damage inflicted on you. Revenge is a major theme in "The Monster's Mother"because the mother attempted to kill Beowulf in order to avenge her only son's death(Grendel)A life that Beowulf took himself,this was shown in lines 622-623. Revenge was not only shown by the mother but also by also by Beowulf.Killing the mother was his final revenge on Grendel for what he has done such as his vicious attacks,killing various men in their beds and eating them.

A literary theme is the main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literary work.
