- An action that continued up until another action or time in the past. It tell us "how long" but the action continues.-Emphasizes action, even incomplete actions.
- I was going to the station when I met John.
- A finished action before a second point in the past, which is expressed in past simple.- Emphasizes result - Focuses on an activity being complete.
- Unfinished actions that started in the past and continue to the present.- Finished action with a result in the present. - Life experience.
- Completed actions in a time period before the present time.- The process of the action is not important. What matters is that the action was completed in the past.
- An action in progress in the past. - Temporary habits. -
- We can use the past continuous for the background of a story and the past simple for actions.
- The birds were singing, the sun was shining and Amy sat down and took out her phone.
- I watched my favourite series.- We ate in a restaurant.
- She was constantly singing. She was always leaving the tap running.
-I've Known Sam since I was a child.- I have been to Tokyo. - They've missed the bus.
-I had been walking for hours when I finally found the house.
-The film started before we arrived.
