1) Introduction

On March 21, 2011, Japan was surprised by an earthquake and subsequently, with a tsunami.

At 2:46 P.M, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake was detected, which then unleashed a strong wave on the coasts. Waves of 9 meters damaged several nuclear reactors in the area.

2) Location

It happened in the Tōhoku region, Japan.

3) Causes

Japan's devastating tsunami originated as a result of the tectonic subduction of the Philippine Plate and the Pacific Plate beneath the continental Eurasian Plate and North American Plate. The plates moved between 30 and 50 meters.

What is the relationship between Japan's earthquakes and the plates? Small earthquakes help relieve pressure from tectonic plates, but sometimes tension builds up and large earthquakes occur.

4) Consequences

Coastal erosion Tsunamis can cause significant erosion in coastal areas, due to the fact that they can move large amounts of materials from one area to another. Coastal forests and soil quality Forests can suffer serious damage as a result of a tsunami, they are able to uproot trees and transport them inland, turning them into floating objects that can increase damage to infrastructure or buildings.

5) Population harm

This event only happens once every several thousand years or so. It is estimated that this natural disaster caused nearly 20.000 deaths, 6.000 injured and 2.500 missing. The problem was magnified because it occurred at the same time as the Fukushima nuclear accident, plunging the entire country into a state of emergency.

6) Video

Hours after the earthquake and its subsequent tsunami, the Karangetang volcano in the Sulawesi Islands (Indonesia) erupted.

NASA has been able to verify that the earthquake could have displaced the island of Honshu approximately 2.4 meters to the east, and altered the Earth's axis by approximately 10 centimeters.
