Hacktivists

Hackers is the general term to refer to all hackers. However, often the context of hackers is used to refer to black hat hackers. Black hat hackers are differentiated from grey hat hackers as they hack and commit crimes with malicious intent or for financial and reputational gain. Black hat hackers will only commit illegal and unethical forms of hacking as that is where the name black hat hacker comes from. Black hat hackers will often work in groups as it allows for larger more effective hacks. Examples of black hat hacking groups are Lizard Squad, TeaMp0isoN and Globalhell.

Hacktivists are groups of hackers in the grey hat hacking scene. Hacktivisits are differentiated from black hat hackers as their motives for hacking are not with malicious intent but rather to make a statement. Hacktivists often will commit illegal or unethical forms of hacking however they hack in the name of activism. This is why they are called Hacktivists. Hacktivists will use the same tools as hackers to hack. These tools include DDOS attacks, SQL Injection, zero day attacks etc. Examples of hacktivist groups are Anonymous, New World Hackers and Guaridans of Peace
