Tommaso Campanella first wrote La città del Sole in Vulgar Latin Italian in 1602. He translated it in Latin between 1613 and 1614 and decided to publish it in 1623 in Frankfurt. Here there is the first edition frontiespiece:

1840: La cité du Soleil, ou Idée d'une république philosophique by Villegardelle is the first French (and the first ever) translation of Campanella's La città del Sole.

1844: Jules M. Rosset translated Campanella's work in French with the title of Cité du Soleil, collected in Oeuvres choisies de Campanella : precedees d'une notice par Louise Colet.

1860: Der Sonnenstaat des Dominikaners Tommaso Campanella ; Chronik der Schule : Beitrag zur Geschichte der Prosadichtung der imaginären Reisen includes the first German translation of Campanella's La città del Sole.

1879: Kaufmann Moritz's first English translation, City of the Sun, was published.

1885: Henry Morley English translation, City of the Sun, was included in "Ideal Commonwealths. Plutarch's Lycurgus, More's Utopia, Bacon's New Atlantis, Campanella's City of the Sun, and a fragment of Hall's Mundus Alter et Idem". It was reprinted and edited in different versions in 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1893, 1896, 1901.

1900: Wessely Ignaz Emanuel's Der Sonnenstaat included the German translation of La città del Sole.

1901: Charles Andrews McLean published "Ideal empires and republics ; Rousseau's Social contract, More's Utopia, Bacon's New Atlantis, Campanella's City of the sun", including Campanella's work English translation.

1906: the first Russian translation, Государство солнца, by Alexander-Paul Henckel was published in the former Soviet Union.

1907: Alexander Edward's The city of the sun was published and collected in "The prince, by Niccolò Machiavelli with an introduction by S. G. W. Benjamin. The city of the sun, by Tommaso Campanella. Essays, by Ugo Foscolo. Essays, by Giuseppe Mazzini. Recollections, by Giuseppe Garibaldi".

1911: A new edition of the French translation La cité du Soleil, ou Idée d'une république philosophique by Villegardelle was published in Belgium.

1918: Государство солнца, a Russian translation was published. The author is unknown. It was reprinted in 1923.

1928: the first Japanese translation of La città del Sole was 太陽の都 / (literally: City if the Sun) by Katō Asatori. A second edition was published in 1929.

1929: Yuaki Morita's Japanese translation, 太陽の国 (literally: Land of the Sun), was out.

1932: a third Japanese translation, 太陽の都 (literally: City of the Sun), by Shimatani Shunzo was published. It was probably based on the German translation included in Der Sonnenstaat.

1934: Sluneční stát by Ryšánek Maxmilián was the first Czech translation of La Città del Sole. It was probably based on the Latin version of Campanella's work.

1934: Город Солнца (literally: City of the Sun) by Petrovskij Fëdor Aleksandrovič was a Russian translation published in the former Soviet Union. It was based on the Latin version of Campanella's work and was reprinted in 1947.

1934: Solstaten: om en filosofisk samhällsgemenskap (literally: The solar state: a philosophical community of society) by Carl Elof Svenning was the first Swedish translation.

1937: Andrews McLean Charles' new edition of City of the Sun, the English translation collected in "Famous Utopias : being the complete text of Rousseau's Social Contract, More's Utopia, Bacon's New Atlantis, Campanella's City of the Sun".

1941: La ciudad del sol by Agustín Mateos was the first Spanish translation of Campanella's work. It was included in "Utopías del renacimiento" by Eugenio Imaz. A second and a third editions were printed in 1956, 1966, 1980, 1985 and 1986.

1942: La ciudad del sol: diálogo poético (literally: The city of the Sun: a Poetic Dialogue) by Sugundo A. and Mondolfo Rodolfo was published. A second edition was out in 1953.

1946: Frederick Randoplh White's English translation, The city of the Sun, was published in "Famous utopias of the Renaissance". It was reprinted in 1948.

1950: The French translation, La cité du Soleil, by Alexandre Zévaès was published.

1950: The Japanese translation, 太陽の都 / (literally: City of the Sun) by Oiwa Makoto was based on the 1844 French translation by Jules M. Rosset.

1951: Sluneční stát (literally: the Solar State) by Mohylov Jirina and Mohylov Otakar was a Czech translation based on the Latin and Russian translations of Campanella's work. The second edition was published in 1979.

1953: the first Croatian translation of La città del Sole was Grad Sunca (City of the Sun) by Šepić Ante.

1953: the first Portuguese translation A cidade do sol was realized by Álvaro Ribeiro. A second and a third editions were printed in 1966, 1969 and 1980.

1953: the Serbian translation, Grad sunca (City of the Sun), by Grabovac Darinka and Petrović Nikola was based on the Latin version of Campanella's work.

1954: The Spanish translation, La ciudad del sol: diálogo poético (literally: City of the Sun: a Poetic Dialogue), by Robredo Agustín Caballero was published in Argentina. In 1959, 1963, 1972 other editions were printed not only in Argentina, but also in Spain.

1955: Another Polish translation, Miasto Słońca (literally: City of the Sun), by Brandwajn Rachmiel and L. was published.

1954: Kornatowski Wiktor's Polish translation, Państwo słońca (literally: State of the Sun), was based on the Latin version of La Città del Sole.

1955: the German work "Der Sonnenstaat: Idee eines philosophischen Gemeinwesens. Ein poetischer Dialog", including the German translation of La città del Sole by Gerhard was published. In the same year, another German translation, probably by Wessely, was out.

1959: Cetatea Soarelui: ideea poetica a unei republici filozofice (literally: "City of the Sun: the poetic idea of a Philosophical Republic") by Ioanid Mircea and Vilt Corneliu was the first Romanian translation of Campanella's work.

1959: A Napváros (literally: City of the Sun), the Hungarian translation by Sallay Géza, was published.

1960: Chen Dawei (陈大维), Li Sifu (黎思复) and Li Tingbi (黎廷弼) collaborated to the Chinese translation 太阳城 (literally: Sun City). It was based on the 1954 Russian translation. A second edition was published in 1980.

1960: Klaus Heinisch's German translation of La città del Sole was published in the collection "Der utopische Staat : Morus : Utopia, Campanella : Sonnenstaat, Bacon : Neu-Atlantis / übersetzt und mit einem Essay "Zum Verständnis der Werke". Other editions were printed in 1962,1964, 1966, 1968 and 1971.

1964: another edition of the Serbian translation, Grad sunca, by Grabovac Darinka was printed.

1965: the first Turkish translation of La città del Sole was made by Vedat Günyol and Haydar Kazgan. The title was Güneş ülkesi. The translation was based on the comparison among the Latin, Italian, English and French versions, as reported in a footnote in the introduction. In 1974, it was reprinted.
