Pythagoras
Mathematician and philosopher. He lived in the 500s BCE. He led a movement to study the nature of numbers. He and his followers came up with the Pythagorean theorem. This famous equation, a2 + b2 = c2, shows the relationship between the sides of a right triangle. It is still used in geometry today.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Greek democracy had a strong effect on the formation of later democracies, including the United States. Greek mythology still influences modern culture. The Olympic Games are today among the largest international sporting events in the world. The works of the ancient Greek writers are depicted through books, theater, and film in today’s world.
Studying the Greeks matters because of Philosophy .
Socrates, the famous Greek philosopher and teacher, developed a method of teaching that involved asking questions and engaging people in debate. This approach came to be called the Socratic method.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Studying the Greeks matters because of Philosophy .
Over the years, Socrates attracted many followers. However, his teaching often opposed commonly held beliefs of Greek society and offended powerful Athenians. Eventually, Socrates was tried in court, convicted of treason, and executed. Socrates did not write down his own ideas, but many of his followers wrote about him and his teachings. These writings influenced many thinkers throughout the ages.

Did not believe in all Greek gods • Focused on moral and how people should best lead their lives • Emphasized search for knowledge as related to moral issues like justice • His beliefs offended powerful Athenian citizens and was put on trial for corrupting the youth

- The Academy was not open to all citizens; only those who were to be political leaders
- Wrote dialogs – imaginary debates with Socrates over moral and ethical issues
- Dialectic method, a teacher asks questions that help students define terms.
- Ideal state would have 3 social classes where each group had own role:
o Kings would rule o Guardians would defend and keep order o Ordinary citizens would produce what is needed for the people
