COUNTABLE & UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

Uncountable nouns are nouns that can't be counted

Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted

Money, water and flour are examples of uncountable nouns. They haven't got a plural form. They are always used in the singular.

Apple, dog and cake are examples of countable nouns. There can be more than one. You can write them in the plural form.

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

Uncountable nouns can become countable ones when we use a unit of measurement or a container.

A + nouns starting with consonant sound: dog, cat, spider, uniform, hamburger.

An + nouns starting with vowel sound: apple, igloo, hour.

There is a green frog in the pond. There isn't an apple in the fridge. Is there a supermarket in Pulpí? Yes, there is / No, there isn't

SOME (affirm. sentences) (count./plur.; uncount./sing. )

Count/ plural: There are some apples on the table.

Uncount / singular: There is some water in the glass.

Would you like SOME cake? (for offers, "some" can also be used in questions)

Count/ plural: There aren't any students in class?Are there any students in class? Yes,there are/ No, there aren't.

A lot of/ lots of (countable/uncountable/ affirma./neg./interro. sentences): There are a lot of flowers / There is a lot of water/ There isn't a lot of flour/ Are there lots of eggs in the fridge?
