Co-Teaching Models
Start
There are multiple ways co teachers can distribute space, time, content and students within a co teaching environment. For the sake of consistency we will offer five basic co teaching models you can discuss and apply with your Costa Rican counterpart teachers as you embark on this co teaching experience.
Feel free to explore and experiment with other co-teaching models on your own. It is always good to continue learning and trying new procedures that make you, your co teachers and students learn better.
One Teaching, One Assisting
In this teaching model one teacher leads, and the other has a supportive role. While one teacher is leading the second teacher provides further clarification, supports students learning, and also further exemplify what is being taught.
+ Info
Parallel Teaching
This model is appropriate for multilevel classes or large classes. Also, there should be sufficient space so the class can be divided in two groups. For this purpose teachers split the class and teach it simultaneously, presenting the same content using differentiated learning strategies.
+ Info
Alternative Teaching
This model is especially useful when you have special needs or slower pace learners within a large group. One teacher instructs the whole group; the other teacher works with a small group of students to pre-teach, re-teach, supplement, or enrich instruction.
+ Info
Station Teaching
In station teaching students are stationed in small groups around the classroom and teachers develop different contents or activities for each group. Both teachers instruct and assist stations and can switch groups as the need arises.
+ Info
Team Teaching
In this model both teachers share the planning and instruction of students in a coordinated fashion. One teacher may lead the discussion while the other models or demonstrates.
