Call for papers

The aim of the Symposium is to bring together researchers whose work concerns the literature, history, culture, and visual arts of the Spanish Golden Age (1474-1681). Submissions from faculty, postdoctoral faculty, independent scholars, graduate and postgraduate students will be welcomed.

Guidelines:
  • Presentations must be 20 minutes maximum in length and must be delivered in person and in English.
  • Only proposals for in-person presentation will be considered.
  • Topic: you can choose any of the following options...
    • (A) Any topic relevant to the study of early modern Spain. Note that this essay will not be eligible for future publication in the collective volume .
    • (B) Featured topic for future publication: "Representations of the body in early modern Spanish art, science, and literature". Scholars interested in participating in the publication of a special issue on the peer-reviewed open-access journal Humanities are required to submit proposals on this featured topic. A list of relevant subtopics includes (but is not limited to):

Interested in knowing more about the journal humanities?

      • Nudity in art and literature;
      • The senses; sensory perception;
      • Political allegories of the body (i.e. the body politic);
      • The body of Christ, Eucharist and transubstantiation;
      • Control (or lack of control) of the female body;
      • Physical monstrosities; physical ugliness or abjection;
      • Non-normative bodies in early modernity;
      • Beauty standards;
      • Bodily alterations (cosmetics, clothing, etc) or transformation (disguise / transvestism and its effects on gender), etc.
