I know Flipgrid has been around for quite a while. But, did you know you can have video or text feedback, that can remain private just between you and your individual student. This will allow the student to record any reflections, thoughts, feedback and you, as the teacher, can reply to your students in a private conversation. Quick Canvas Tip

Discussion Podcasts & Oral Feedback

There is a feature in the grade book that allows you to email/message students based on whether a certain assignment has been graded, not turned in, or based on certain grades. Click button to see how-to video.

Top 15 Finds from TCEA 2022

Podcasts are all the craze these days. Create a Canvas Discussion, have students record a Podcast (or oral feedback) into their discussion response by using the record media option, and then students can review and comment on each other’s Podcast or feedback. You can do the same thing with a Canvas Assignment.

I did not go to TCEA this year but James Flaskamp (DLC at Independence) did go and here is a video of what he found!

Digital Tools for Quick Feedback

Want feedback and want it quickly? Try one of these gems.

  • Mentimeter Quick and easy tool for gathering quick checks for understanding.
  • Flipgrid Retrieval Practice - get students to "brain dump" without looking at notes
  • Jamboard Do not ask students if they have questions; ask every student to ask one qustion about the lesson or activity.

3 Quick Checks for Understanding using summarization

take a gander

Summarization of learning is not only an effective means of helping them increase comprehension and retention of new material, it can also provide teachers with insight into whether students are really grasping important ideas. Here are a few ideas:

  • Compose a tweet in 280 characters or less answering the question: What is the big idea that you have learned about _____?
  • Record a one-minute podcast or vodcast using an app on a smartphone or Chromebook to summarize the key concepts from one or more lessons.
  • Prepare a weekly letter to your teacher (or parents) summarizing something that you now understand as a result of your learning during the past week.

Collapsable filmstrip

in Google Slides

You can now collapse the left filmstrip in Google Slides where it shows all of your slides and quickly show just the slide you are on. It's not quite presentation mode, but still cool because it gives you more space to view the current slide.

Feedback: Focuses on monitoring & assessing learning progression in relation to the learning intention or task.
  • How am I doing?
  • What progress is being made towards the goals?
Feed-forward: Relates to the next steps required for improvement on a specific task or learning intention.
