Colombia is located at Nouthern South America Also a bit of the famous Andes Mountains passes through Colombia Colombia is home to an average 10% of the Amazon rainforest, an area covering 403,000 square kilometres. Colombia has a diverse climate from tropical steppe, rainforest as well as glacial climate in the Andean mountain regions. More than 60% of the country are low-lying grassland and sparsely populated. Colombia sits on the Ring of Fire and is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
Biodiversity in Colombia
Colombia is rich of natural resources such as petroleum, natural gas, coal, gold and copper. Colombia is also the country with the world's largest number of bird species.It has the largest amount of endemic species, that means animals that exist only in this country. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Snow-Covered Mountain range of Santa Marta) is an isolated mountain range in northern Colombia, separate from the Andes range that runs through the centre of the country. In Colombia there are a lot of mountains that form part of Andes Mountains
Traditional Colombian Food
- Arepa, a circular bread made from fresh cornmeal.
- Empanadas, made with savory yellow corn dough stuffed with rice, cooked potatoes, meat, chicken and lots more.
- Ajiaco, beloved in the city of Bogota. It's a hearty chicken soup made with potatoes and corn on the cob.
- Bandeja Paisa consist of two types of Colombian sausage, ground beef, rice, red beans, a fried pork rind called chicharron, an arepa, a platain, a slice of avocado and a fried egg to top it all of.
Carnaval of Baranquilla
Barranquilla's carnival is the biggest celebration of folklore in all Colombia and one of the world's largest carnivals, with more than a hundred years of tradition. The festivities run for four days and Colombians and visitors alike party in the streets in a colorful celebration of Colombian culture. During the carnival, Barranquilla's normal activities are put aside as the city gets busy with street dances, musical and masquerade parades. Wildlife of Colombia
- Colombia has unique animals living in each of its diverse habitats, the most notable wild animals in Colombia are:
- Pink River Dolphin this unique dolphin lives in the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in Colombia.
- Jaguar – Some jaguars live in tropical rainforests around the Amazon basin. Others live on the savannas and grasslands of Colombia.
- Black Caiman Crocodile – These crocodiles can grow to be 20 feet long and are the most common crocodile in the country, their combined power and speed makes them an easy choice for the list of the most dangerous animals in Colombia.
- Colombia is home to 54 species of parrots that include macaws, parakeets, and parrotlets. Contrary to popular belief that parrots reside solely in the Amazonian rainforests, these incredible birds are found in regions across Colombia and even large cities.
Places to visit in Colombia - Cartagena de Indias One of the best places in Colombia for vibrant architecture and culture, Cartagena were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. - Caño Cristales (also known as the river from 5 colours) in the Colombian National Park of La Macarena has been called the most beautiful river in the world. - The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an underground church built inside a salt mine, and made entirely of salt. - Gold Museum in Bogota Colombia contains more than 55,000 pieces of gold and other materials from pre-Hispanic cultures. - Plaza Botero is an outside park in front of Museo de Antioquia that displays 23 abstract bronze sculptures created by World-renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero. One of the most recognizable attractions in Colombia's capital Bogota, - Cerro de Monserrate, is a hill towering above the city with a church perched on its top.
