Infectious disease outbreaks are increasingly common due to multiple, interacting global changes and developments. These changes can trigger processes that disturb the fragile balance in the complex human-animal-environment ecosystem, up to the point where the condicions are created for new infectious disease outbreaks,

Mosquito Alert is a participatory science project, in which citizens are the ones who collect the data, mainly photos of mosquitoes. This large amount of information needs to be analyzed and validated so that it can become useful information. At Mosquito Alert, this is done through a team of expert and knowledgeable entomologists who classify useful images and discard those that are not.

There are around 3,500 species of mosquitoes in the world. Of all of them, a few are responsible for the transmission of pathogens and parasites to humans and animals. Some of the mosquitoes that may be responsible for disease transmission in Europe are invasive species. At Mosquito Alert, we focus on the study of invasive mosquitoes and the common mosquito, some of which are important disease transmitters. These are the mosquitoes we study! Can you memorize them?

Ready for the question?
ORIGIN OF THE TIGER MOSQUITO AND OTHER SPECIES
The tiger mosquito, like other species of the same group, is native to the Asian jungles and temperate forests. They have lived there since long before the arrival of human beings. Although mosquitoes can fly, they do not travel very much. With the arrival of man, mosquitoes found a new source of food and a multitude of new places to lay their eggs. Later, with the advent of modern civilization and globalization, many species spread throughout the world. We call these invasive species.

The tiger mosquito has the ability to hibernate in the form of an egg. Some mosquitoes can remain in this state for a long time (almost a year) and do not hatch until conditions are optimal. The mosquito lays its eggs on an object, such as used tires, which we later transport around the world, especially by boat. As an adult, you can also use other means of transport, especially cars, where you travel shorter distances!

One of the keys to Artificial Intelligence is to "ask" machines to learn by themselves, because it is impossible to pre-program instructions that take into account the infinite combinations of data that occur in the real world. This strategy is known as machine learning. At Mosquito Alert we are working with 20 thousand images (sent so far by citizens and classified by our experts) to "train" a machine and make it an expert in identifying the tiger mosquito. Right now, it is already capable of identifying 90% of our images.

Some consider mosquitoes "the most dangerous animals in the world." It is true that they can ruin our afternoon in the garden or wake us up in the middle of the night with their buzzing. But what makes them so dangerous? Their danger lies in the diseases they can transmit. Malaria, dengue, yellow fever or Zika affect millions of people each year. The WHO considers that more than half of the world's population is exposed to the risk of contracting diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. This ability to transmit viruses and other pathogens through their bites makes their study, surveillance and control necessary.

In any project in which data are collected, it is essential to know the sampling effort well to harmonize the bias that the data may have. That is, if in a place there are many people collecting samples (for example of mosquitoes), it could seem that there are many more than in an area where there are no people. In Mosquito Alert, this happens, but we can correct it thanks to the fact that the majority of participants authorize us to know their location.

The Mosquito Alert app allows anyone to notify, with a photo, the discovery of one of the mosquitoes we study, as well as their breeding places. Together with the photo, the location of the observation and other information necessary to help in the identification of the species is collected. Once validated, the result is published on the public map, where all the recorded observations can be consulted and downloaded. Recently, a module has been incorporated that allows to report the bites received by mosquitoes.

All mosquitoes depend on water, they spend a part of their life submerged in it. A female bites to extract blood and to be able to manufacture many eggs. These eggs are always deposited in the water (or very close to it) and tiny aquatic larvae will hatch from them. Larvae are eating and growing machines. When they are ready to become adult mosquitoes, they become pupae, which like the chrysalis of butterflies are a protection that allows them to complete the metamorphosis, which will eventually lead them to become adult mosquitoes.

Mosquito Alert is a cooperative citizen science project. With an app, anyone can report mosquito bites or breeding sites. A team of experts is in charge of validating the data, with which different maps are generated. This information complements scientific work in mosquito surveillance, and can be used by public health managers for monitoring and control. Thoroughly analyze the diagram and make sure you understand it. When you are ready, turn to the next page to answer a few questions.

Both companies and agencies deal with pests whether they are in public or private areas.
Pest management in public areas is usually handled by health agencies, whereas pest control companies handle pest management in private areas.
Which is correct?

Health managers only deal with the pest control.
Health managers are responsible for both surveillance and monitoring.
Control of a pest means working to reduce its population, while surveillance refers to analysing the distribution (spatial and temporal) of the pest in question.

Although citizen's data are useful, they are not reliable enough to be used for plague surveillance, or control.
Once the data generated by citizens are filtered by experts, they can be used to deal with health issues.
