Project Management Challenges in our indsutries

The second part of the presentation gives information on industry specific PM challenges. We focused on two challenges per industry.

Data-dependency projects

Challenge 1 - Data availability

One of the most challenging areas when a development made by a data-consumer partner is greatly depending on data-generator partner/s. The second group has to be committed to generate enough data on time for robust development and validations.

Challenge 2 - Definition of roles

Probably a common challenge in any kind of project. The definition of roles is strongly associated with the definition of tasks; and the respect for the defined structure is a key factor for the health of the project cycle.

Public Sector - Government Projects

Challenge 1: Make the organization more adaptable to change

Traditional project companies who execute projects for the government have a slow decision making process and a hierarchical structure. Besides, many projects are taken for fixed prices and the total project is delivered at the end of the deadline. The collaboration between the stakeholders is minimal even as the feedback on the project during the execution.

Challenge 2: Stimulate innovation

Through innovation the company can simplify processes that are becoming complex and improve their products. Besides that employees who contribute to innovations are more willing to also make the change.

Projects in Hospitality Industry

Challenge: Innovation and Digital Transformation

Lack of Communication

Since hotel staff is at the front line when it comes to facing the guest, understanding their needs, and delivering personalized service, they should be the ones classified as the main stakeholder when it comes to adaptation in service components. However, there is very little or limited bottom-up communication when it comes to changes in standards or policies.

Hospitality consists of a physical product (hotel room, meal in a restaurant, etc.) and a service delivery/component. Therefore, innovation needs to cover both elements, whether it is upgrading the in-room features with the latest technology as well as how personalized service is delivered with the support of digital applications without losing the human factor.

Machine & Tool Industry

Challenge 1: Digitalization

For some time now an increasing digitalization of our lives has been observed. No one is surprised anymore by the role of mobile devices or the amount of information that is now being moved and processed around the world. Machines are ready to incorporate more intelligence and more sensor technology to increase productivity and services. The challenge is to know how to face this new era of digitalization.

Challenge 2: Logistics

This is a common challenge in many industries but when you work with these kind of tools it is even more so. Machines of up to 120 metres long can be built and must be constructed on a sufficiently large site and then transported to their destination. It may also happen that two machines of these dimensions are built at the same time, in which case the logistical problems increase.

Pharma Industry

Challenge 1: Poor risk management

Challenge 2: Change control failure

Certain manufacturing changes (i.e changes that alter specifications, a critical product attribute or bioavailability) require regulatory filings and prior regulatory approval. Change is an inherent part of the life cycle of a pharmaceutical product. Change control failures can result in modification or deletion of procedures related to manufacturing facility, utilities, material, product, procedures or equipment (including software) which impacts on quality and not meeting regulatory requirements.

The Risk Management is a systematic process for the assessment, control, communication, and review of risks involved on the process within this sector. Pharma industry faces often risk management issues. This can comprise many sectors and areas, such as cyberthreats, data breaches, supply-chain related risks, geopolitical exposures and others involving third to four parties.

CONCULSION

"Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning."

  1. Provide clear definition for “Done”, “In-Progress”, and
“On Hold” for clarity on project status.
  1. Simplify reports to make data-driven decisions, use PM software to have multiple views to visualize project progress.
  2. Implement a Business Transformation Office (BTO) and Strategy Realization Office (SRO) where suitable.
  3. Agile Project Management or Hybrid application Project Management if needed.
  4. Implement Organizational Change with full support of Top Management (C-Suite).
  5. Product-Centric Delivery Model withour loosing focus of customer-centric and feedback driven approach.
