The personality Colombian of the year

María Cano

Maria Alexandra Cifuentes Arango

She was born in Medellín, Colombia, August 12, 1887 — Died on april 26, 1967

She was a pioneer of labor struggles in the country. She was the first Colombian woman to participate openly in the political life of the country.

She was characterized by intense activity in favor of the workers motivated by the inhumane working conditions that occurred in the Antioquia textile industry

A great fighter

Her first public incursions began with his connection to the literary movement of the early 1920s, in Medellín.

Together with María Eastman and Fita Uribe, she led the writing of the newspaper El Correo Liberal.

Maria Eastman

National Flower of Labor and the woman of the eight hours

The Workers' Congress made up of artisans, master contractors and working women, conferred on her the title of National Flower of Labor. from Colombia.

She fought traveling all over Colombia by bus, to convince about somthing called eight hours of work, eight hours of sleep and eight hours of study-.

I nominate her because:

María Cano was perhaps the first woman who fought in Colombia not only against class and gender inequalities, but also to be a socialist woman with her own ideas.
