PRESENT AND PAST CONTINUOUS
PAST CONTINUOUS
PRESENT CONTINUOUS
We use the past continuous to talk about:
*something that happened before and after another action:
Ex; The children were doing their homework when I got home. *to show that something continued for some time:
Ex; My head was aching.
*with verbs which show change or growth: Ex; Her English was improving.
We use the present continuous to talk about:
*activities at the moment of speaking Ex; We are studying english *future plans or arrangements Ex; I'm going to do my homework after class
PAST CONTINUOUS/PROGRESSIVE
The Past Continuous tense expresses actions at a particular moment in the past. The action started before that moment but didn't finish at that moment. For example, yesterday I watched a film on TV. The film started at 7pm and finished at 9pm.
IN PAST CONTINUOUS IS LIKE THIS;
I WAS WATCHING TV AT 8 PM YESTERDAY
structure;
SUBJECT + WAS/WERE + VERB WITH "ING" + CONTEXTEx; I WAS DOING MY HOMEWORK*For negative sentences we add not between the auxiliary verb and the main verb. *For question sentences, we exchange the subject and the auxiliary verb.
PAST SIMPLE
PAST CONTINUOUS
- The Past Continuous focuses on the duration of past activities
EXAMPLE;A: I didn’t see you at the party last night.
B: No, I was watching the football at home.
- The Past Simple focuses on past actions as complete facts.
COMPARE EXAMPLES;A: I didn’t see you at the party last night.
B: No. I stayed at home and watched the football.
VS
Sometimes both tenses are possible. The Past Simple focuses on past actions as complete facts.
When we use these two tenses together, it shows us that the past simple action happened in the middle of the past continuous action, while it was in progress. We often use these tenses to show an action interrupting another action.
Ex; I FELL ASLEEP WHEN I WAS STUDYING Can you see a difference in the meaning of these two sentences?
When the guests arrived, Jane was cooking dinner.
When the guests arrived, Jane cooked dinner.
In the first one, Jane started cooking dinner before the guests arrived. We know that because it uses the past continuous. In the second sentence, the guests arrived first and then Jane started cooking.
