What is Hydroelectricity?
Environmental Impact:
Hydroelectricity or hydroelectric power is a form of energy that harnesses the power of water in motion to create electricity.
Negative
Positive
- Land Use
- Drought
- can change water qualilty
- No air pollution/improves air quality
- Helps to fight global warming
- Produces no harmful chemicals
Economical Impact:
Why use Hydroelectricity?
Hydroelectricity is Renewable!!!
Positive
Negative
- displace more expensive generation at fossil-fuel powerplants
- Higher initial Costs.
- cost in case of a failure in system.
How does it work?
- Uses a reservoir of water and an area where water will settle into.
- Potential energy is converted to kinetic energy to turn the blades of turbine.
- Most common type of hydroelectric power plant is called an impoundment facility.
- Chalillo Dam located in Belize.
Social Impacts:
Negative
Positive
- Increase in employment.
- Development to communities
- increase socializing
- Loss of Cultural Heritage Assets
- River recreational benefits were reduced.
