What's the function of a preposition of movement?
The prepositions of MOVEMENT are used to express the motion or movement of an object/person/etc from one point to another one.
Across
- Moving from one side to the other.
Example:
THROUGH
TOWARDS
Moving/looking/facing in the direction of something, somewhere, someone in specific. Example He's running towards the finish line.
ALONG
Moving in line/ following the same path or next to something, someone.Example: The girl is walking along the sidewalk.
VS
UP
DOWN
- Indicates the movement from a higher to a lower position.
- Indicates the movement from a lower to a higher position.
PAST
- Moving along, ignoring or leaving something, someone behind.
into
out of
Entering a place, get into somewhere (it also applies to some life situations).Example: They walked into the house they're looking forward to buying.
Leaving or getting out of a place (or a situation). Go to the outside.Example: They're getting out of school, they just want to go home.
around
We use around and round when we refer to movements in circles or from one place to another. Around and round can both be used. Around is more common in American English.Example: He's a pilot so he flies around the world.
UNDER
OVER
Moving below a place, below somewhere.Example: She was getting under her bed, she was scared.
Moving across a surface without touching the surface. Moving at a higher place.
