Historical Facts and Process

The Period of Terror characterized by thousands of death sentences to anyone who was considered a traitor to the Revolution, was monopolized by the constant changes of government. Some historians mark the end of the French Revolution in 1799 when Napoleon Bonaparte was appointed consul for life and suppressed many of the freedoms gained. Others, on the other hand, extend it a little more until the coronation of Napoleon in 1804, since it meant the establishment of a new monarchical order, based on military power.

The French Revolution was a historical process that lasted several years and was marked by various historical events. Its beginning is usually located in the Storming of the Bastille by the Parisian people on July 14, 1789, as this event triggered others that led to the fall of the monarchy and the establishment of the first French republic. Another key event in this process was the promulgation of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen by the French Assembly, in which the inalienable rights of all men were recognized.

Historical Facts

• Economic, political, social or cultural relevance due to its impact on a people, society or organization. • Be causally related to other historical facts. either its origin or its consequence. • Promote a break or change in the social and economic organization or. If necessary, it will contribute to have permanence or continuity. • It can be carried out by a person, a group, an institution and even a country as a whole.

The category of historical fact has been developed by historians to identify one of its main objects of study. Unlike the common events that occur every day, such as getting up in the morning, having breakfast and brushing your teeth, historians propose that, to be classified as historical, an event must have at least the following characteristics:

Historical process

As can be seen from the above, historical processes can have different durations: long, medium or short. For example, the First Industrial Revolution started in England lasted more than a century, while the French Revolution lasted nine years.

Another category used to explain and understand history is that of historical process. These are made up of a variable number of historical events, organized on the basis of causal and logical relationships, in such a way that when joined they give meaning to a process of varying duration.

In addition, the effectiveness of certain actions is often analyzed, based on criteria such as their relationship with the purpose that motivated them or the short and long-term consequences. In doing so, a critical judgment is made about what happened.

Historical explanation

Explaining what happened in the past implies understanding the actions of the various historical subjects, whether individual or collective. From the causal relationship between events and between historical processes, it is possible to understand how these actions were linked.

Historical explanation

  • Establishing a research problem and writing guiding questions.
  • Search and selection of historical sources.
  • Analysis or criticism of sources.
  • Construction of the historical explanation.

To construct a historical explanation a series of steps is followed, which constitutes the method that historians use.
