about the survey

context

The M&ABJ Bristow Public Library conducted a Community Interest Survey for roughly six weeks between the last week of July and the first week of September. The surveys were available in paper format and online.

objectives

The aim of the surveys was to obtain data pertaining to the community's wants and needs and to define community interests. The library intends to use data from these surveys to guide its decision making processes.

Observations

When online survey data is compared to paper survey data, there are some notable differences. Also, the data is not truly descriptive of the community: the library was unable to get data from residents in low income housing environments.

survey content

The following categories were key takeways from the data presented in the surveys:

Audiobooks & LP

Hobbies

Reading

Roughly 94 percent of patrons enjoy reading. Notable were a number of respondents stating access to audiobooks or large print would increase their reading time.

Gardening, outdoors, travel, agricultural interests, DIY/ arts & crafts were the top hobbies of respondents.

80 percent of patrons use and desire access to audiobooks and/or large print books.

Movies

community wants

Subject Interests

Key community requests are more youth and teen programming as well as more adult programming. Make & Take Crafts, book and movie clubs were other top requests.

Gardening, outdoors activities, travel, arts & crafts, and agricultural-related topics are the tope interests of patrons polled.

Increased number of movies in the library are a top request of patrons. Desired genres include: Comedy, romantic, action, and mystery/thriller/crime drama.

... enjoy mystery/thriller genres; yet, zero percent of paper respondents reported reading this genre. A notable minority seeks DIY and How-To materials.

Overwhelmingly categories pertaining to outdoors, gardening, and agricultural interests ranked as key interests.

Yet a large percentage of library book orders continue to be explicitly these genres.

conclusions

Up at at 'em! Let's do this!

  • Y'all really like gardening! Also, we anticipate travel to be a growing interest.
  • Library aims to provide better programming for youth & teens, adults, and seniors.
  • We will provide both educational and entertaining programming. We will provide programming in person, and digitally when necessary.
  • We aim to modify our collections in format and content to better suit our patrons' wants.
  • We also aim to increase access to audiobooks (both on CD and digital), large print resources, and movies.
