LIGHT

Photography whould not exist without light

ABOUT LIGHT

01

Originally, in photography, light passed through the lens, "impressed" a film and left its presence indelibly.

Then two other steps were carried out: the film was "developed", inserted in an enlarger and, with other light, it was reproduced on photosensitive paper.

Today the light hits one or more sensors that transform it into a series of numbers, into a set of codes that are stored in the SD card.

Lighting is a key factor in creating an image. It determines not only the brightness and darkness, but also the tone, mood and atmosphere.

FOUR CONTROLLABLE QUALITIES OF LIGHT

02

01

02

INTENSITYThe intensity of a light source can vary almost from total darkness to painfully bright. Dark objects absorb more light and reflect less into the camera, while bright object reflect more light.

COLOURAlmost all the colours that come to your mind can be created through the use of coloured gels or electronic means. Colour can be an important "actor" in creating mood.

04

03

MOVEMENTRefers to the change of light whether it is a change in intensity, color or direction.

DIRECTIONThe light can come from below, from above or from any intermediate point. It can also come from behind or from the front of the subject. Each combination of light direction has its own unique effect on the light and shadow produced

SHAPING LIGHT

03

Light coming from behind the camera and pointing directly forward provides flat illumination. The side light produces a much more interesting light. The light coming from the back of the subject offers an alternative effect, making the subject brighter, creating a dramatic image.

The source from which the light comes has a huge impact on how in falls on the subject.

MANIPULATING LIGHT

04

Adding a diffuser to the light source reduce glare and harsh shadows and reduce subject imperfections. It gives the light a softer and more natural effect

BASIC LIGHTING

05

BUTTERFLY

DIFFUSE

REMBRANDT

RING

The light is placed on the side of the subject at about 90* and positioned at the level of the subject.

So called for the butterfly-shaped shadow under the subject nose. Butterfly lighting is created when the light is above the subject and in line with the camera

It is a dramatic contrasting lighting coming from the top and from the side

Produce a small shadow of the nose on the shadow side of the face

TIPE OF LIGHTING

06

GRAZING LIGHT

CONTINUOUS LIGHT

DIFFUSED LIGHT

In the studio, it allows to see the result immediately before shooting, making it easier to compose than a flash light.

Like a cloudy day, it allows you to absorb shadows and obtain "softer", more "poetic" images. It is a photography where the light source is not directed on the subject and therefore its reflection is not unidirectional, but "diffused"

Grazing light favours shadows and hardness. It is used in situation where we want to highlight the contrast. It can be natural, in full sun or artificial using headlight or flash studio.

LIGHT REFRACTION

Refraction refears to the light that passes from one medium to another, influencing the speed and direction of light. Ina refraction photography, the light in the background is essential.

LIGHT REFLECTION

Reflected photography, or mirror photography, is when reflective surfaces are used to create an image. Drops of water, metal, mirrors are generally used for this type of photography.Just as images are reflected from the surface of a mirror, light reflected from a smooth water surface produce a clear image. On a rough surface, the light hit different regions of the surface which are inclined at different angles to each other. Consequently, the outgoing rays are reflected in a many different angles and the image is disrupted. Reflection from a rough surface is called "diffuse reflection".

LIGHT ABSORTION

The absorption of light append when a light ray hit a surface; the energy of the light is transferred to the surface material of the object, creating heat.An absorbent surface prevent the reflection and diffusion of the light that hits it. In photography, absorbent panel or black cardboard sheets are used to dampen the light.

LENS FLARE

Lens flare append when light is scattered in a lens system, producing an artefact that is sometimes unwanted in the image. Lenses with a large number of "glasses", like zoom lenses, tent to have more lens flare.

VIGNETTING

vignetting, know also as "light-fall of", is common in photography, witch in simple terms means darkening of image corner when compared to the center. It is caused by optics or purposefully added in post-production in order to keep the eye away from distraction in the corner.
