Cleft sentences

This emphasize a particular part of the sentence.

There are 2 patterns:

It + be + emphasized phrase + that

To emphasize the subject, object or an adverbial phrase.

In Brazil, the beaches are the most popular places to visit.

In Brazil, it's the beaches that are the most popular places to visit. (SUBJECT)

I most want to visit Canada.

It's Canada that I most want to visit. (OBJECT)

Most people go to Cancun in summer.

It's in summer that most people go to Cancun (ADVERBIAL PHRASE)

What or the thing(that) + subject + verb + be

To emphasize the subject, object, a clause with that or a clause with a wh- word. The information that we want to emphasize goes at the end. After the verb be.

I love dogs most.

The thing that I love most is dogs. (OBJECT)

We need to decide which dates we can travel on.

What we need to decide is which dates we can travel on. (Wh- clause)

I hope that our train isn't delayed

What I hope is that oue train isn't delayed (that clause)

What + subject + verb + to do + be + (to) + verb base form

My country needs to invest in tourism

What my country needs to do is (to) invest in tourism.

DO, DOES, DID IN AFFIRMATIVE SENTENES

We can add a form of do to affirmative sentences to add emphasis.

We don't add do when a sentence already contains an auxiliary (be or have) or a modal verb.
