NATUREVS NURTURE

Nature

nurture

The idea that the way we were raised determines our behaviour. We were nurtured to act in certain ways.

The idea that vour genetics determine our behaviour. The way that we act is in our nature.

Biological

Influences

since we inherit genes from our parents, this also applies to the way we act. we were born a certain way with certain traits and preferences.

the environment influences the way we act and our personalities. 'nurture' can refer to parents and teachers - essentially who you grew up with.

Environmental variables

Genes + Hereditary factors

physical appearance, personality characteristics are obtained from our DNA.

childhood experiences, relationships (social) and culture are all from the outside world.

High BP and obesity

High BP and obesity

nurture suggests that poor eating habits can provide a pathway to obesity, and the inability to control personal behaviours that contribute to high blood pressure

*example* nature explains high blood pressure is down to genetics, as well as obesity (eg, thyroid)

Mental health

Mental health

individual differences are based on genetic polymorphisms, which are alterations in an individual's DNA. A mental disorder cannot be caused solely by a genetic variation. A mental disease can occur as a result of a combination of genetic polymorphism and environmental factors.

trauma: abuse, both physical and emotional may lead to a development in mental illness emotional disturbance: such as being bullied - loneliness, or lack of emotional support or traumatic experiences.
