Why do we need the 5 freedoms
The five animal freedoms are an important part of legislation put in place to help protect animals by imposing a duty of care on all animal owners to take the reasonable steps to ensure an animals welfare, vetrinary staff take on this duty of care when an animal is in their care.

Freedom from hunger and thirst
Freedom from discomfort
Freedom from pain, injury and suffering
Freedom to express normal behaviours
Freedom from fear and distress
Ways you can provide the 5 freedoms
- provide ready access to fresh water and a diet that maintains health
- Provide a comfortable area for resting / adequate shelter
- By prevention and rapid diagnosis and treatment
- Providing sufficient space for natural behaviours such as play
- providing adequate conditions and treatment that avoid mental suffering
