INTRODUCTION

Animal experimentation is today a basic activity of medical science. It is opposed by movements for animal rights, normally founded on a purely natural vision of man and animals, which equates them.

DEFINITION

Animal experimentation is defined as an activity whose mission is to demonstrate or clarify biological phenomena on specific animal species.

At present, animal experimentation continues to play a leading role in many areas, these are some of them:

  • In agri-food
  • In human and animal health
  • In biotechnology
  • In the environment
  • In genomic research
  • In medicine and pharmacy
  • In oncology

BIOETHICS

  • Animal experimentation occupies a priority place among topics related to animal welfare, as it is a highly complex subject, both due to ethical problems and the social response it generates.

Experimeter's position

Need for the use of animals by the human species

  • Animals have been used in many studies, but also in many cases, in which, without their use, the human species would have disappeared.
  • In order to correctly treat the point of view of all those who experiment with animals,

The NO need to use animals in experimentation

  • Despite how strange it may seem, a new trend has appeared today against animal experimentation with a totally scientific basis.

Position of the scientific community towards animal experimentation

Researchers who make animals the object of scientific observation are morally obliged to have respect, affection and gratitude towards them.

The role of society and scientists

The legislation referring to the protection of animals destined for experimentation is a reflection of the demand of a part of the scientific sector to see their professional activity regulated.

ANIMALS OF EXPERIMENTATION

Each animal species has its own characteristics that can become criteria of choice for the researcher. Obviously, to conduct an effective experiment, these characteristics must be known.

Most used species

Rodents and lagomorphsThese animals have general characteristics that make them very suitable for use in the laboratory, such as their small size, their high prolificacy, their ease of handling and maintenance, etc.

CarnivoresWe find dogs, of which the Beagle breed is used, cats and of these crosses between Abyssinian and European are used, of the mice the albinos are used more because they are less nervous than the colored ones

Most used species

Farm animals: Small animals are preferred for economic and management reasons, however, there are certain studies that require larger animals.

Non-human primates:This simple statement assumes that it is a group of great importance for biomedical research, taking into account that the most anatomically similar species to man are the gorilla, the chimpanzee and the orangutan.
