Student Learning Style Activity for Teachers & Students
by: Kayla Eastridge
Overall goal: Teachers give your students the following tasks and participate as well in order to guage their learning. Along with a reflection paper. Each student has a different technique or understanding when it comes to learning. Trying out each element can help each student discover what fits them best. Instructions/set-up: In different areas of the room there will be stations that pertain towards a specific activity and exercise. For example if a student approaches the "Physical/hands-on" station they will be asked to create an experiment, draw, or participate any other physical activity. After a student has completed a station they will write a reflection based on their experience and how it applied to them. In the reflection there will be such questions like "Did you learn anything from this activity? Did this activity give you a better understanding of the topic we are learning?" and more to help level every students capabilities. The list of stations 1. Visual Learning: Students who tend to learn better by visual aids such as charts, graphs, or watching projectors and presentations. 2. Physical Learning: Students who tend to learn better by demonstrating an activity such as an experiment, drawing out their work, or working through a puzzle. In this style of learning students digest material more efficiently by doing "hands-on" activities. 3. Auditory/ Aural (audio) Learning: Certain students who grasp material more effectively by listening to what they are learning such as audiobooks or music. 4. Logical Learning: When students understand topics more effectively by performing logical tasks such as problem-solving based questions and strategy based games. 5. Verbal Learning: Students who understand more with learning when speaking such as engagning in group discussions, giving presentations, and etc. 6. Solitary Learning: Differing from that of a social learner, solitary learners prefer working alone and tend to get more done at their own pace. GIving students the chance to work alone can show whether they engage more with groups or by themselves. 7. Social Learning: The opposite of solitary learners are social learners who tend to engage more when involved in group discussions, group activities, and working with their peers. 8. Nature Learning: Students who strive more when placed outdoors, or engaging in outdoor activities like gardening.
Reflection
Teacher Questions: Which station did each student perform at the best? What are the overall styles of learning that students prefer? How can I incorporate each of these elements of learning into my teaching? Student questions: Which station did I prefer more than others? Which station helped me learn the material the most? What methods would I like my teacher to include our learning? Do I have a better understanding by watching a presentation or listening to educational audio?
