The subject is the one who perfom the action.Active voice sentences are direct, clear and strong.
We want to focus on the thing or person that is acted upon. The object becomes the subject.

- Bananas are adored by monkeys.
- The money was counted by the cashier.

When writing a sentence from an active voice to a passive voice, the verb to be in the passive voice is in the same tense than in the active form.
Why using the passive voice instead of the active voice ?
REASONS TO USE THE PASSIVE VOICE
We don't know who did the action
My car was stolen last night
To not accuse, to be more diplomatic
I'm afraid a mistake has been made
We don't need to mention the agent
Smoking is not allowed.
To keep the focus on the object
Obama was voted the first black president of the USA
To stay/appear objective, scientific, technical or logical (report).
Her clothes were soaked, suitcase was broken and her neck, severed.
