CABLE/CHAIN
- An anchor is connected to a ship through a cable
- An anchor cable can vary in size, material and length from a 2-inch manila for a small boat to a 3-inch chain cable for an aircraft carrier
- Length of studded chain cable is normally measured in shackle or half shackle
- 1 shackle = 27.43 metres = 15 fathom = 1 shot

Lugged Joining Shackle
To join two cables together
Joining Shackles
Lugless Joining Shackel
To join two anchor cables together
Arrangment Onboard Ship
A cable or chain locker is a compartment in the forward position of ships in which anchor chain is stowed

MARKS ON CHAIN/CABLES
The detachable chain is painted colour while chain painted white on each side is remark of how many shot has been released to the sea.Yellow paint on each chain after to the last is to give alerts that its running out of chain. Red paint next to the last is the last shot.
AMOUNT OF CABLE USED
Amount of cables to veer in shackles is twice the square root of the depth of water in metres
Standard condition: Length of cable = [(Depth of water in meters * 2) + 90 ] / 27.5 1:5 (ship length: cable length)
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
When good holding power can not be expected: (e.g. Strong Wind, Strong Current, Harder Sea bottom) Length of cable = [(Depth of water in meters * 3) + 140 ] / 27.5 1:7 (ship length: cable length)
Thank you!
