Definition

There are almost as many definitions as poets out there

Definitions from Different People

William Wordsworth: "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings." Emily Dickinson: "If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can warm me, I know that is poetry. "

Robert Frost: "Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words."

E.E.Cummings: "If a poet is anybody, he is somebody to whom things made matter very little - somebody who is obsessed by Making."

--> Poetry is a lot of things to a lot of people

Definition

Poetry is a matter of the readers own feelings, it is refusable to be defined, to be labeled or nailed down.

Features indicating Poetry

-Stanza -Rhyme -Meter -Line Break -Usage of Stylistic Devices Not all poems rhyme! In fact, MANY of them do not rhyme.

A Bird, came down the Walk - He did not know I saw - He bit an Angle Worm in halves And ate the fellow, raw, And then, he drank a Dew From a convenient Grass - And then hopped sidewise to the Wall To let a Beetle pass - He glanced with rapid eyes, That hurried all abroad - They looked like frightened Beads, I thought, He stirred his Velvet Head. - Like one in danger, Cautious, I offered him a Crumb, And he unrolled his feathers, And rowed him softer Home - Than Oars divide the Ocean, Too silver for a seam, Or Butterflies, off Banks of Noon, Leap, plashless as they swim.
