Examples: Notice the use of tú and usted

  • Profesor: Buenos días. Me llamo Sr. Victor Guzmán. ¿Y tú?
  • Estudiante: Me llamo Melanie Hernández. Mucho gusto.
  • Profesor: Igualmente. ¿Cómo estás, Melanie?
  • Estudiante: Bien, gracias. ¿Y Ud.?
  • Profesor: Muy bien, gracias. Hasta luego.
  • Estudiante: Adiós, señor.

Words that are similar in English and Spanish are cognates. Examples:

  • professional = profesional
  • correctly = correctamente
  • imaginary = imaginario
  • importance = importancia
  • elegant = elegante
  • famous = famoso
  • adoption = adopción
  • curiosity = curiosidad
  • frequency = frecuencia
  • conflict = conflicto
False cognates are words that appear to have the same meanings but do not. They do not have the same origin, or ancestry or beginning source, so their meanings are not connected. Their similar spellings or sounds can trick learners into thinking they have similar translations. Examples:
  • largo means long (not large)
  • Pie means foot (not a dessert)
