Dark Souls is an action role-playing video game developed by FromSoftware and published by Namco Bandai Games. Originally released in September 2011 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it is a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls and the second title in the Souls series. Dark Souls takes place primarily in the fictional realm of Lordran, where players assume the role of a character named "Chosen Undead" who, according to legends, is responsible for breaking a curse that renders those afflicted by a mysterious mark unable to die. black. The game is strongly inspired by the medieval theme, with the presence of gods and fantastic beings, inserted in a decadent and punishing world. The structure of the presentation of the story is subjective, taking place basically through the description of items or in interactions with NPCs, allowing for different interpretations of the entire mythology present in the game.

Dark Souls has been critically acclaimed since its release, with praise mainly for the complexity of its combat and gameplay, level design and its story and setting. On Game Rankings, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions have 89% approval ratings in aggregated reviews, indicating universal acclaim. The PC version of the game was not very well received, with direct criticism for its numerous technical flaws;the game had sold over two million copies worldwide. Two sequels, Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III, were released in the mid-2010s, while a remastered version, Dark Souls: Remastered, was released in 2018.
