parts of the narrative
1.1 sentences
they are the basic building block of narrative.sentences are the vehicles for the images.
They are cause-and-effect situations
1.2 conflicts
Narrative is a container for conflict.
time
1.3 scenes
a clock ticking
Is essentially a moment in time when people are in conflict with other.
three essential ingredients
a place
an intriguing, interesting setting
and action!
two or more characters involved with troubles
1.4 Building narratives using: conflict-crisis-resolution
Writing successful scenes into the narrative
conflict-crisis-resolution
1. Start with conflict right away. Readers are not interested in the buildup. Plunge into problems. 2. Build to crisis. Start with the conflict and show conflicts that increase the intensity. The most significant conflict in the narrative s called crisis. 3. End with resolution. Janet Burroway suggests the next options to solve the narrative crises:
- The two fighting forces call a truce
- The two fighters call a truce and agree to fight again later
- Declaring victory, the hero lives happily ever after, and the loser suffers
- Losing, the main character offers insight into life with loss
- The two fighters both realize no one will ever win
- Each side thinks it has won
Some important aspects
- You don't have to resolve the conglict itself, you just have to solve the story line
- It's good for your ending to provoke discussion, but not confussion
- Look back to your opening, make sure everything is connected and the links are clear and logical according to the crisis of the story
- Focus on the point of change, the psychology of your characters, the impact of the battle, the conflict, their lives. etc.
EXAMPLE
1.5 Pulling it all together: Writing Scenes for narratives
To write a scene, it helps to prepare
- Draw the problem
- Consider polarity
- Tighten up the time
- Pick a place
Here is a recipe yu can use throughout this class.
2 Parts of poems
Many poems use narrative structure and tell a story.
tow basic typs of poetry
1. Lyric Poetry: Which is image-based, expressing the feelings and observation of the speaker. 2. Narrative Poetry: Which use images but places them in a clear story, or narrative format.
A Word on Words
2.1
In a poem, every single word matters
- Words are chosen with deliberate care by the poet to create a certain effect on the reader.
- A poet may take into consideration: the sound of the word, its history and connotations, the feeling of the word in the reader’s mouth, how a word interacts with other words in the poem in terms of echoes
- In poetry, words are as important as sentences in a prose
- In a well-constructed poem, we obtain a strong image for the eye and a pleasing soundscape for the ear
each word stands out and carries some weight on the page
a word must earn its keep
peotry is excellent to practice economy, specifity, and attention to language
In a poem, words provide the foundation of your piece, thus each word is purposefully selected or rejected based on how they will fit the overall pattern and how sturdy and perfeclty formed they are.
lines
2.2
if words are cells, lines are the bones in a poem
- A poetic line can be a full sentence, but they're usually cut into pieces
- The end of a sentence is not necessarily the end of the line
- A line is not the same thing as a sentence
- Lines make up the basic rythm in the piece
Line break: a word the line ends on; when a lince ceases and starts a new one End-stopped: a line that ends in punctuation. Enjambed: a line that has only a part of a sentence; it creates suspense at the beggining of the next line
a line is a single line of poetry; all the words on one line of text
lines have to be well-consturcted and power-packed
a line has as much to accomplish as a paragraph in an essay or a scene in a narrative
- A line always has to move in a certain direction, from point A to point B. Each line is a micro-movement.
- Just as words, each line has to earn its keep in the poem.
- A line can be as short as a word.
- Short lines can be very effective and hard-hitting
- With longer lines, the poet has to be more attentive to the principles of poem structure
Poets want their lines to work harder than sentences.
a poem is a terrific, tight, beautifully crafted piece of art
A good poet attends to each line as if it were a miniature poem
prose poetry is formatted like a narrative but demonstrates other traits such as symbols, metaphors, and other figures of speech common to poetry
2.3 Turns
Poetry
No straight lines
Serie of turns
Verse
I Love Joey [Poem]

I love Joey Joy is adorable and hot Joy and I were meant to be His wife will see this someday soon.

dramatic turns in every line different direction
first poem for you - kim addonizio
I like to touch your tattoos in complete darkness, when I can’t see them. I’m sure of where they are, know by heart the neat lines of lightning pulsing just above your nipple, can find, as if by instinct, the blue swirls of water on your shoulder where a serpent twists, facing a dragon. When I pull you to me, taking you until we’re spent and quiet on the sheets, I love to kiss the pictures in your skin. They’ll last until you’re seared to ashes; whatever persists or turns to pain between us, they will still be there. Such permanence is terrifying. So I touch them in the dark; but touch them, trying.
- A poem has at least one turn, and most often this turn is toward the end of the poem.
- Often there will be small turns leading up to the big turn toward the end.
- In poetry, words, lines imagery, and tone indicate turns.
- A turn is simply a chanfe in directions.
- It's an essential building block
2.3Stanzas
what is a stanza in poetry?
Stanzas come in all shapes and sizes
Series of lines grouped together in order to divide a poem
Stanzas can be revealing
purpose
To group ideas or images that belong together
StructureOrganization Set a mood
2.4Playing with form
it's always difficult to read about the structure, and much easier to simply begin writing
