How do we form adverbs?

Thumb test-

Most adverbs end in -ly - Manner adverbs. However, there are adjectives and nouns that also end in -ly- How do we know? -> Thumb rule If a word ends in -ly and you remove this ending and discover a noun, then it is an adjective. If you remove the -ly and find an adjective, then it is an adverb Eg_ wifely - wife -> adjective quietly - quiet -> adverb

Other categories for the form of adjectives

  • Simple adverbs : well, too, here
  • Compound adverbs : nowhere,anyway
  • Fixed phrases: of course, at last.
