As the legislative body of the European Union, the European Parliament is located in Strasbourg. This is the only international institution where members are elected by direct universal suffrage. Along with the Council of the European Union, it participates in drafting European legislation. It also puts forward its opinions concerning proposed texts submitted to it by the European Commission. Moreover, it shares responsibility for budgetary matters with the Council. Finally, it plays a political verification role towards all the institutions of the Union, which report back on their activities to the assembly. When necessary, it can set up committees of inquiry.

Located on Avenue du Président Robert Schuman, IPE 1, 2, and 3 are office buildings and meeting rooms of the European Parliament (IPE 4 being the Louise Weiss building which houses the hemicycle on the other side of the river). This set of buildings is connected to the IPE 4 (the Louise Weiss Building) by a small bridge across the river.

ARTE (Association for European Television) is a European television channel created in 1991. ARTE fashions, produces and broadcasts international programs and schedules of cultural nature. Created on May 5, 1949, the Council of Europe is the oldest European intergovernmental organization. It currently brings together 46 European countries, representing more than 680 million Europeans. It is completely independent from the EU, but collaborates with it in certain areas. All the 27 EU member states are members of the Council of Europe. Its main objectives are human rights protection and preservation of democratic values. The European Convention on Human Rights adopted in 1950 is one of the greatest achievements of the Council of Europe and remains the heart of its activities today. The Council of Europe composed of two bodies: the Committee of Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly, as well as three institutions: the European Court of Human Rights, the Commissioner for Human Rights and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe.

Created on January 21, 1959, it is responsible for ensuring respect for the fundamental rights enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights, adopted in 1950 by the Council of Europe and which defines the rights and freedoms that the member states commit to guarantee for their citizens. It is composed of 46 judges equal to the number of States which have ratified the Convention. Anyone who claims to be a victim of violation of his/her conventional rights can file a complaint to the Court.

So-called “Pères Oblats” house, vestige of a former Oblate convent is moved and rebuilt identically on its current site.

Created in 1969 by Nobel Peace Prize winner and first President of the European Court of Human Rights, René Cassin, the institute organizes annual training sessions for jurists from around the world about fundamental human rights.

The Information Center on European Institutions (CIIE), a result of a partnership between the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg, the Grand-Est region, and the Bas-Rhin department, was created in 1995. It is a member of the Europe Direct network, an information service of the European Union. Located on the first floor of the Lieu d'Europe in Strasbourg, its mission is to inform the general public about the programs and policies of the Union, as well as the life of all the European institutions present in Strasbourg. It provides brochures, various exhibitions and activities for schoolchildren and the general public.

As a place of education in European citizenship open to all, the vocation of the Lieu d’Europe is to make Europe known to citizens and to strengthen their feeling of belonging to a community of values. Since 2014 the Lieu d'Europe has been participating in the European missions assumed by the city of Strasbourg. Situated in the heart of the European district, it includes a permanent exhibition, a relaxation area, and a conference room aiming to bring the Europe of Strasbourg to life. The Lieu d'Europe also hosts the premises of the Information Center on European Institutions and its documentation center located on the first floor of the building.

The Lieu d'Europe is located in the heart of the European district of Strasbourg. Since 2014it has been participating in the European missions anticipated by the city of Strasbourg. The Lieu d'Europe also houses the premises of the Information Center on European Institutions (CIIE) and its documentation center.Open to the public from Alsace or elsewhere, the Lieu d'Europe welcomes adults and school groups to get information and discuss about the European institutions, their policies and values.

Created in 1964, the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Health Care (EDQM), commonly known as the European Pharmacopoeia, is an organization that helps to unify the standards of the various national pharmacopoeias, to harmonize and validate control methods of medicines for human or veterinary use. It plays a major role in the standardization of the quality of medicines and their certification: active ingredients, biological products, vaccines.The EDQM is a part of the Council of Europe, it contributes to protection the fundamental values of access to quality medicines and health care.

Since 2006, the European School of Strasbourg offers an educational model common for the European schools. Based on the multicultural approach, it focuses on languages and the autonomy of the child. The school offers a full curriculum from kindergarten to the European Baccalaureate, a diploma recognized not only in all EU member states but also in many other countries.The European Schools are official educational establishments created jointly by the EU and the governments of the member states. They enjoy the legal status of a public establishment in each of these States.Intended primarily for the children of European and international civil servants, the schools remain open to the local publics.

Recourse to the European Ombudsman intervenes in the cases of maladministration of a Community institution or body, for example in the event of administrative irregularities, abuse of power, absence or refusal of information, excessive delays or discrimination. Any EU citizen or any natural or legal person residing or having its registered office in a Member State can lodge a complaint with the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman is elected by the European Parliament every 5 years.
