History of Measurments

isabel siliezar

( 2750 B.C. )

The Cubit Was the first recorded standard linear measurement. Measurement was from the tip of the forefinger to the middle of the elbow. Used by Egyptians

( 1500 B.C. )

The Sundile was made by Egyptians to measure time. It was based on the sun and were it was lockated during the day

( 1400 B.C. )

The water clock measures time by tracking the amount of water that drips into a basin or tank. Water had to be stable and that failed sometimes. This means that when measuring time, the water clock was never truly accurate.

( 1670 - 1790 )

The meter is invented as 1/10,000,000 of the distance from the equator to the North Pole

( 1866 - 1875 )

Cavendish Experiment was the first succeful measurement of Earth's mass. It measured the force of gravity between different masses.

( 1795)

( 1790 - 1795)

The system of measurments, the metric system, was first adopted by France. This system is now used officially in almost all countries

The concept of "liter" was made in France. It was defined as 1 cubit desimetric.

( 1795 - 1866 )

An international agreement known as the Meter Convention defined metric standards for length and mass.

( 1889 )

As a result of the Meter Convension, the U.S recived a prototype meter and kilogram to be used as measurment stadards.

( 1893)

These metric prototypes were declared vital standards of length and mass in the Mendenhall Order. Since then, the yard, pound, etc. have been officaly defined in terms of the metric system.

( 1965 )

The area begun to be used/measured by firguring out the length of several measurments adn them computing the area.

( 1971)

The mole (a amount of substance) is added to the SI. This creates the current system of seven units.

( 1996 )

All surface temperatures observations were now reported in degrees Celsius

( 2015 )

Measurement Standards Laboratory (MSL) begins work to develop a Kibble balance that is much simpler than existing Kibble balances. The Kibble balance is an electromechanical instrument that measures mass.

( 2019 )

Four of the base units (the kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole) are modified based on fixed values for some fundamental constants of nature
