Global Citizenship Education

University of Galway (4 October 2022)

What is Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and why is relevant?

“When you understand that under capitalism a forest has no value until it's cut down, you begin to understand the root of our ecological crises.” Adam Idek Hastie

Why is it important to learn about human rights?

What is Global Citizenship Education (GCE)?

Global Citizenship Education is an educational process aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of the rapidly changing, interdependent and unequal world in which we live” GCE inspires solidarity by supporting people to realise their full rights, responsibilities, and potential as global citizens in order to take meaningful action for a just and sustainable world. By challenging stereotypes and encouraging independent thinking, GCE helps students critically explore the root causes of global justice issues and how they link with our everyday lives

The key components of GCE

Action

Global citizenship education provides the understanding, skills and values students need to cooperate in resolving the interconnected challenges of the 21st century

Attitudes

Methodologies

Values

Skills

Knowledge

The Junior Cycle SOL, principles, key skills and indicators are all cultivated in the teaching and learning of GCE

Global Citizenship Education has a solid human rights basis!

Article 26: Everyone has the right to education. At school we should be helped to develop our talents, and be taught an understanding and respect for everyone’s human rights. We should also be taught to get on with others whatever their ethnicity, religion, or country they come from. Our parents have the right to choose what kind of school we go to.

The Guiding Principles of GCE

How can I effectively implement GCE in my classroom?

The Guiding Principles of GCE

What makes a Global teacher?

The seeds that help cultivate a global citizen in schools

Promote student voice

Highly complex

Do you encourage students to be proactive learners and to engage in dialogue, reflection, debates and uncomfortable conversations and collaborative + individual reflection?

Do you explain that global issues are highly complex, multi-faceted and multi-layered, and cannot be resolved using simplistic solutions?

Local to Global links

Critical approach

Do you ensure students connect local issues with global issues, rather than exploring justice issues in isolation?

Do you create a learning environment that ignites curiosity and inquisitiveness, supporting students to get to the root causes of issues by engaging in critical and analytical thinking and thorough research practices?

Solidarity approach

Do you promote a solidarity approach to exploring global justice issues, which serves to empower communities to take a systems change approach to resolving issues themselves ?

GCE is Human rights

 Are you aware that GCE has a solid human rights basis and therefore you know that looking at environmental issues and animals in isolation, without looking at the impact of humans does not qualify as GCE.

Unlearning + Reconstructing

Do you encourage learners to unlearn dominant streams of thought and to investigate mainstream media, alternative discourse, potential bias, stereotypes, etc.?

Scaffolds the learning

Do you cultivate systematic learning before + after an event or task to ensure learners engage in a deep learning process?

Critical approach

Do you allow students to identify, challenge and question different perspectives, assumptions, prejudice and unconscious bias?
