a little About CHESS

Chess, an abstract game with twists and strategies. It is played on a square shaped board with 32 + 32 small squares of different colours (64 total small squares). The most common colours used in Chess are white and black. The player controlling the white peices always starts first. It consists of 16 peices per player, - 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops and eight pawns. The objective to win the game is to checkmate the opponent player’s king peice.

Vishwanath Anand's childhood

Vishwanath Anand was also called 'Vishy Anand' by his loved ones. He was born in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, in a Tamil Brahmin family. Shortly thereafter, he and his family moved to Chennai (also called Madras) for chess and life education and holds a degree in commerce from Loyola College, Chennai. Vishwanath Iyer, his father worked at the Southern Railways and his mother Susheela was a housewife and a big chess aficionado. She taught him how to play chess when Vishwanath Anand was just 5 years! And Vishwanath Anand started playing chess at the age of 6. He was the youngest of his three other siblings.

Vishwanath Anand's Interest in chess

Vishwanath Anand’s interest in chess brightened up at the age of 5, his mother introduced him to chess. She was a big chess aficionado. Vishwanath Anand was fascinated how strategy based chess was. At the age of 6, he started participating in various chess competitions. Over the years he won a lot of prizes and medals with his excellent skill of chess. This is how his interest in chess sparked in his heart. He used to say - “The best part about playing chess was that it never became a reason to stop doing anything else."

When Vishwanath Anand used to be in school, a TV program used to play in the afternoon where the hosts give a chess puzzle to solve and the audience could send the answers to them. His mother used to copy down the puzzle and when Vishwanath Anand returned from school he would solve it and send it. And it always used to be a peice of cake for him. He did his chess schooling from Don Bosco, Egmore, Chennai. He had a great coach, Peter Heine Nielsen (Born - 24/03/1973) who taught him a style. The style was marked by a deep understanding chess but also by quickly grasping tactical patterns and opportunities.

Vishwanath Anand's successes and acheivements

At the age of 14 Vishwanath Anand became the National Sub-Junior Chess Champion. More success followed when at the age of 15 he won the title of International Master and became the youngest to do so! When he had turned 18 he became India’s first Chess Grandmaster. Later in his Adulthood, he won 3 Advanced Chess tournaments which was conducted in Leon, Spain. He was so good, that he became one of the only chess players to pass an Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) of 2800 in the year 2006! He also won 5 world chess championships.
