Grammar and Writing

We will practice grammar and writing daily in our Grammar/Writing notebooks. While the notebooks must stay at school, here is a review of what we've learned so far. Reminder: we will have a quiz every three weeks.

Unit 1 (Quiz 09.17)

  1. Complete Sentence: expresses a complete idea
subject + predicate 2. Subject: the thing (noun) either doing or being something what the complete sentence is about 3. Predicate: the verb phrase - whatever this subject is/are or is/are doing a. action verb - an action b. linking verb - a state of being *usually followed by an adjective Ex. The cat(subject) napped(predicate/action verb). The cat(subject) is(predicate/action verb) orange. 4. Fragment: a piece of a sentence missing a subject, predicate, or both 5. Object: the nourn receiving the action doen't do anything Ex. shuts the lid (object) 6. Four Sentence Types a. Declarative (Statement) . Ex. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains 3.5 million tons of waste. b. Interrogative (Question) ? Ex. How can we eliminate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? c. Exclamatory (Exclamation) ! Ex. We must protect our oceans! d. Imperative (Command) . ! Ex. Help reduce the Great Pacific Garbage Patch! *It is imperative if you can put a "you" in front of the sentence and have it make sense.
