Finish The requirements for a PhD thesis are defined by the doctorate regulations of the Radboud University. In addition, the Radboudumc has guiding recommendations. Want to know more about this phase? Click here.

Course Scientific integrity We strive for impactful research that leaves no doubt about its integrity. For second year PhD candidates, we organize a mandatory course. More information can be found on this webpage.

Checkpoint 2, year 1 This checkpoint marks the formal "go/maybe/no go" assessment with the entire supervision team and an independent advisor. See procedure of this "go/maybe/no go" meeting.

Advanced Graduate School training certificate Information on the training certificate is available in Checklist 3.

Meeting with mentor (MM) Each PhD candidate has a personal mentor—an experienced PhD supervisor from a different department who is not involved in the PhD candidate’s project. Mentors support candidates in scientific reflection and career planning and are available for help with challenges. More information available in Checklist 1.

What happens during a checkpoint?

  • Annual meeting with supervision team to discuss the progress.
  • Meeting at 12 months: "go/maybe/no go" assessment.
  • Meeting at 12 and 24 months: independent advisor present.
  • CP questionnaire as a guide for the meeting.
  • Focus on: Progress PhD project, update Training and Supervision Plan, development PhD competences, workplace and learning climate, including supervision.
In addition, the PhD candidate:
  • Fills out confidential questionnaire (only visible to Graduate School coordinator and confidential contact persons for PhD candidates and Postdocs) about progress of the PhD project, coaching and supervision, and well-being.
  • Updates portfolio (courses, congresses, seminars, teaching).

Checkpoint End of PhD project (3 months before finish) The original contract of the PhD candidate expires in 3 months. A new contract may be needed to continue working in Hora Finita. More information can be found in Checklist 3.

Submission manuscript to Manuscript committee Regulations on the composition of the manuscript committee are available on intranet.

On track (3 - 4 years) You have probably realized that time passes surprisingly quickly when doing your PhD. Keep a close eye on the progress via regular progress interviews with your supervisors. A progress interview offers the opportunity to discuss the content of the research, the status of the manuscript, the well-being of the PhD candidate, and the planning. But above all, progress interviews are intended to support PhD candidates in their development. What does the PhD candidate need from the supervision team? Is the supervision adequate? What is the working and learning climate like? Want to know more about this phase? Click here.

Checkpoint 3, year 2 The independent advisor who attended Checkpoint 2 is also present at Checkpoint 3. The checkpoint consists of:

  • The PhD candidate arranges a meeting with the supervision team and the independent advisor.
  • The PhD candidate fills in the CP questionnaire in preparation of the meeting.
  • After the meeting the PhD candidate completes the CP questionnaire.
  • The PhD candidate also fills in the Confidential questionnaire, which can only be accessed by the Graduate School coordinator and the confidential contact persons for PhD candidates and Postdocs (and not by the supervisors).
  • After completion of both questionnaires the PhD candidate submits the CP.
  • The CP questionnaire will then be sent to the daily supervisor for approval.
  • The PhD candidate adds the activities (e.g., courses, congresses, symposia, teaching) done till this CP to the training portfolio.

Introduction courses We have two mandatory introduction courses:

  • The general introduction for research personnel (more information in OLO).
  • The "In the lead" introduction for PhD candidates (more information in OLO).

Training and Supervision Plan (TSP) The TSP should be submitted via Hora Finita within three months after start of the PhD project. The PhD candidate submits:

  • TSP (more information available in Checklist 1)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research Data Management Plan (DMP) (more information available in Checklist 1)
  • (If available) the full research proposal (e.g., ZonMw, KWF, NWO proposal)

Checkpoint 1 (at 3 months) This is the first checkpoint moment. During this moment, the following actions are scheduled:

  • The PhD candidate arranges a meeting with the supervisors, at least with the daily supervisor.
  • The PhD candidate fills out the CP questionnaire in preparation of the meeting.
  • After the meeting the PhD candidate completes the CP questionnaire and submits the CP.
  • The CP is sent to the daily supervisor for approval.
