Singular & Plural Nouns

Nouns

words that describe:

People Places Things Animals Ideas

When we are talking about only 1 person, place, thing, animal, or idea, it is a singular noun. When we are referring to 2 or more, it is a plural noun.

How to turn a singular nouns into a plural noun?

Regular Nouns

To turn most regular nouns into plural nouns, we have to add -s at the end of the word:

house - houses cat- cats table - tables book - books car - cars tree - trees

With other regular verbs, we have a couple of rules:

If a singular noun ends in ‑y and the letter before the -y is a consonant, change the ending to ‑ies to make the noun plural.

If the singular noun ends in ‑o, add ‑es to make it plural.

If the singular noun ends in ‑s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z, add ‑es to the end to make it plural.

If the singular noun ends in -y and the letter before the -y is a vowel, simply add an -s to make it plural.

If the noun ends with ‑f or ‑fe, the f is often changed to ‑ve before adding the -s to form the plural version.

Irregular Nouns

Some words do not follow the rules for regular plurals. Some of them do not have a plural form. For example:

Sheep - sheep Deer - deer Fish - fish Music - music Scissors -scissors

Here are some common irregular nouns:

Person - people Man - men Woman - women Child - children Foot - feet Tooth - teeth Mouse - mice

There are more irregular plural nouns you will learn them with practice.

The name of a person, place, thing, animal, or idea is also a noun.
