Ch.10 Gravitation

Universal Law of Gravitation

Thrust & Pressure

Mass & Weight

  • Archimedes' Principle:

Statement: When a body is immersed fully or partially in a fluid, it experiences an upward force that is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by it.

  • Mass: The mass of an object is constant and does not change from place to place.
  • Weight: On earth, the weight of an object is the force with which it is attracted towards the earth.
  • Weight may vary from place to place but the mass stays constant.
  • Thrust:
  • Pressure:
  • Pressure in fluids:
  • Buoyancy:
  • Floating & Sinking:

- Gravitational force: - Universal Law of Gravitation:- To calculate gravitational acceleration (g) of earth:

  • Relative Density:

The relative density of a substance is the ratio of its density to that of water.
