The intention and development of the BASE are to solve a particular organizational problem of practice. The BASE is a way to streamline the data needed to capture student disengagement from secondary online coursework and hopefully trigger appropriate supports.

Before and during the development of the BASE, teachers, administrators and support staff were consulted to determine the needs of all the potetial users of this tool. The goals to consider were: 1. Early detection of students needs before they fall behind too much 2. Commonality in students who have similar needs for future planning

The need has arrisen to help teachers, administrators and support staff move away from the reactive model of responding to the barrier of sustaining engagement in online learning. Instead, the BASE will help build a process of proactivity in fostering a thriving online learning environment for students with these challenges.

While we cannot claim to be able to break down all these barriers today, the BASE might be able to help us organize and be proactive about our decisions regarding support for students who are struggling.
