In 18th century France, salons and Coffeehouses were organised gatherings hosted in private homes, usually by prominent women.
Individuals who attended often discussed literature or shared their views and opinions on topics from science to politics. It consequently became an important source of political ideas and revolutionary sentiment.The salons and coffeehouses of Early Modern Revolutionary France also played an integral role in the cultural and intellectual development of France. Salons became a center of intellectual conversation, as well as a debate stage for social issues, playing host to many members of the Republic of Letters.
One of the most critical aspects of a salon and coffeehouse was deciding who to invite. Most salonnières or Coffee Shop owners tried to construct guest lists that would allow a mix of opinions, generate challenging discussions and prove interesting for all involved. Three key characteristics were shared by the coffeehouses and salons as public sphere institutions: sociability, equality and communication. During the gathering they amuse one another and increase their knowledge through conversation.Women played an important role as spectators. Salons run by women were mostly known as Saloon yeas. Women also started building coffee houses. One such example was the coffee shop of Madame Geoffrin. These coffee shops and salons played an important role in french revolution and the idea of having hot discussions with hot coffees still continues in some parts of the world!!
