CIRCULATORY SYSTEM IN ANIMALS

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM IN ANIMALS

All animals must keep their cells supplied with nutrients and oxygen, and all must rid themselves of celular wastes.

INFO

Circulatory system in simple organisms

Some invertebrates, including cnidarians and flatworms, rely on diffusion alone to accomplish these tasks. In these animals, nutrients and gases reach cells by diffusing across a body surface and then diffusing through the interstitial fluid (the fluid between cells).

INFO

OPEN AND CLOSED CIRCULATORY SYSTEMA circulatory system is an organ system that speeds the distribution of materials within in animal´s body. It typically includes one or more hearts (muscular pumps) that propel a circulatory fluid through vessels that extend throughout the body.

OPEN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Some invertebrates (arthropods and most mollusks) have an open circulatory system, in which a heart or hearts pump circulatory fluid (hemolymph) into open-enden vessels. The hemolymph leaves the vessels and mixes with the interstitial fluid, where it makes direct exchanges with cells before being drawn back into the heart through openings in the heart wall.

CLOSED CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Other invertebrates (annelids, cephalopods, mollusks) and all vertebrates have a closed circulatory system, in which vessels form a closed loop. A heart or hearts pump fluid (blood) through a continuous series of vessels.

EVOLUTION OF VERTEBRATE CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

All vertebrates have a closed circulatory system with a single heart. However, the structure of the heart and the circuits through which blood flows vary among vertebrate groups: The Fish heart has one atrium and one ventricle. Force imparted by the ventricle´s contraction propels blood through a single circuit. In amphibians and most reptiles, the heart has three chambers: two atria and one ventricle. Blood flows in two partially separated circuits. Oxygenated blood and oxygen-poor blood mix a bit in the ventricle. In birds and mammals, the heart has four chambers: two atria and two ventricles. Oxygenated blood and oxygen- poor blood do not mix.
