question 1/6

Students worked on a new challenging topic, it has passed two weeks and the teacher wants to know how much they have learned. To recall information the teacher can use one of the following strategies. Read them and decide which one will help students more to support new learning and growth mindset?

Asking students to go over notes, highlight and re read the information

Having a retreival quick quiz

question 1/6

Right answer, You're trying to go further!

Reason: Retrieval practice is a learning strategy instead of an assessment strategy. A low- stakes quiz can help students to practice retrieving information newly and previously learned during a short period of time like 1 or 2 weeks. So, avoid using quizzes only as a tool for grading and provide effective feedback with them, with this practice students will have the opportunity to learn and recall the material in a non rote way, knowing where they are in a learning process and seeing quizzes as part of their learning routine.

question 2/6

In one English course the teacher is planning how to assign students practice time about a topic they have seen. To practice this new information the teacher can use one of the following strategies. Read them and decide which one will help students more to support new learning and growth mindset?

Distributing practice of the topic in one single day

Distributing practice of the topic in several days

question 2/6

Right answer, you must be working really hard on this!

Reason: As learning is the outcome, it is important to have different moments for practicing. Consider spreading practice over the course for several days and offering a few problems each day, instead of one single day. This will help students to get into the habit of working the skill over time.

question 3/6

When preparing students for their final test or mastering a topic, the teacher can design material that... Read the following strategies and decide which one will help students more to support new learning and growth mindset?

Using tasks that make students feel competent and they know everything

Using tasks that cause productive struggle

question 3/6

Right answer, you are firing neuron and making connections to understand this material!

Reason: Offering challenging tasks that require students to use critical thinking skills and apply effort will lead them to better retention. Therefore, it is important to provide opportunities that help student to engage in rigorous scaffolded learning. Remember some struggle help the brain to learn and retrieve information.

question 4/6

The teacher and her group of students have just finished working on a new topic. She wants to connect it with a previous one and also wants to know their doubts about it. Read the following strategies and decide which one will help students more to support new learning and growth mindset?

Asking them straightly about what they learned or don't understand

Using a thinking routine like 3,2,1

question 4/6

Right answer, we like the way you are triying new strategies on a problem!

Reason: Thinking routines are strategies used to make learning visible. They are a set of questions or a short sequence of steps used to scaffold and support student thinking, they create the habit of thinking about how one thinks or learns. 3,2,1 is a routine that can help a lot. In this one you ask students to write down 3 things they learned from a previous class or today's learning, 2 things they found interesting and 1 question they have about the content. In this way you can recognize where they are in their learning and some difficulties about the new content.

question 5/6

The teacher wants to find a way to connect new information about a new topic that is being introduced, he wants to do it in a meaningful and brief way, besides he also wants to realize how much students know about the topic. Read the following strategies and decide which one will help students more to support new learning and growth mindset?

Using an entry ticket

Using games to introduce the topic

question 5/6

Right answer, you're trying to go further!

Reason: This strategy has different uses. It can be used to connect the learning from a previous day, to encourage in new learning or to make learning relevant by connecting it to a concept in students' lives. You can do this by inviting students to answer an open question prompt, solve a problem, identity a misconception or ask a question. This strategy provides a structured routine time for all students to think and share their thoughts.

question 6/6

The teacher wants to find a way to help students to know how they best learn. He also wants to get a way to increase supporteffectively to the students. Read the following strategies and decide which one will help students more to support new learning and growth mindset?

Using a thinking journal

Using a multiple skills survey

QUESTION 6/6

Right answer, you are opening you mind to new ideas and strategies!

Reason: It is important that we know our students needs as learners. A thinking journal is a metacognitive strategy to help students to identify how they best learn. It also helps them to keep a track of their thinking process, strengths and weaknesses as a learner, as well as the strategies that aid in learning, it leads to reflections on learning experiences. It can help you a lot as a teacher too, you can be aware of what they need. For each task you can give your students a question or an exercise, for example, ask them to create a thinking self-portrait, featuring descriptions of themselves as learners.

You won't be graded on this, this is a risk free zone!

The methods previously mentioned in the answer are some classic strategies to retain information. Sometimes students dive into an all-night cram session doing this, but the crammed information won't stick to their brains very long. Instead of focusing in short- term learning, we can help them to focus on long-term learning by constantly asking them to retrieve information from their minds by mean of other resources.

yOU MAY NOT UNDERSTANT ALL OF IT RIGHT AWAY, BUT I WANT YOU TO GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY!

Allow for practice to be distributed. If we plan one larger practice in one single moment, we have the risk of letting some students behind, denying them learning at their own pace and reducing chances for future practice or teacher's feedback. If we use this strategy students might keep the new information just for a moment, but forget it later as it wasn't retrieved and frequently used. Additionally, we would continue perpetuating the idea of studying for the moment and short- term goals, once you saw it, should you know it?

This might be difficult right now, but as you learn more, it will become easier!

Making feel our students successful and comfortable with what they know is important. However, our mission is also to provide them deep authentic learning. It is essential to keep a balance between students' actual developmental level and the students' potential development. Providing productive struggle can cause the same effect in students making them feel they are being challenged while they are learning. After all, no all students will feel stimulated by knowing everything, this might reinforce a fixed mindset, we must always force them to look for deeper learning.

This is challenging but rewarding!

Although this is a traditional form to inquire for information about your students and try to connect ideas, sometimes it is not the best one. Some students might feel shy or not confident enough to share, they can even not tell you what they really have in their minds or don't understand. Consequently, it would be better to search for more didactic ways that push them to think and share in a more friendly form. Thinking routines help to create the habit of thinking, sharing, connecting and representing ideas in different ways and moments of the learning process.

Games are an important part of learning, they are fun and create a memorable atmosphere in the classroom. We love games and there is not reason to avoid them, just be careful that by using games you don't inhibit your student’s ability to understand and internalize English as a media for communication. Sometimes games tend to take too long or are often competitive. When using games use them purposefully and wisely bearing in mind your target "encouraging learning", so they shouldn't turn you aside from it. Nevertheless, there are other strategies you can explore besides games that are also quite interesting and can help you to connect ideas and being powerful diagnostic tools as well .

we are pushing you because we know you can achieve more !

Using multiple learning skills survey might not work as students are not really thinking about their process, these tests are standardized and not personal. Surveys work as a strategy as long as you provide deeper introspective questions and ask students to think about themselves. Using a traditional survey probably will lead students to give an expected or superficial answer. What we look here is to help them to recognize weaknesses, strengths, strategies that aid learning and reflections on their own learning experience.
