To the right, the proposed conceptual model (Venn Diagram) illustrates the relationship between theory, research method, and the research question as it is used to analyze a Mixed Methods research example. A mixed methods article was used to demonstrate the intricate and complex nature of research. While the dichotomy between positivist and constructivist research exists, given that researchers within the field of education generally lack consensus about which methods, questions, rules, and criteria (Coe et al., 2021), a mixed methods approach seemed most appropriate to analyze. The dynamic interplay between theory, research method, and research question, must all be balanced on top of the researcher's theoretical position. It is with this strong foundation, and the linkages between each component, that meaningful knowledge and understandings are created or discovered within the field of education.
