Amazing facts about Pompeii:
- Even if Pompeii was a Roman city, the oldest structures unearthed in Pompeii appear to have been designed by ancient Greek settlers.
- If the wind would have blown on the day that the Vesuvius erupted as it usually did, it would have blown the ash away from the city, but it just happened that the wind was blowing directly towards Pompeii that day.
- Vesuvius' most recent eruption was in 1944. And it will erupt again, that’s why the volcano is strictly monitored by the Italian authorities.
- Mount Vesuvius is seen as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to its proximity to an extremely densely populated area.
- There is a lot of graffiti from before the eruption.
- Some people were instantly killed by the heat alone.
- By some estimates the Vesuvius eruption was far more powerful than the Hiroshima-Nagasaki nuclear bombings.
- Frescoes have led historians to believe that women were treated as equals or sometimes superiors to men in Pompei.
