Preparing Your Surface Before Setting Up a Sterile Field and Setting Up a Sterile Field

N206 Campus Lab - Dr. Concilio

Think about what you need before you start- once you enter the room, do not leave until your sterile procedure is over. Common Terms: Cleaning: this is the removal of visible food debris and grease. It is usually done with hot water and detergent. Disinfection: this is the reduction of germs to a safe level and is usually done by the use of special chemicals intended for food use (we use Caviwipes or Bleach wipes), or by heat (hot water at around 82°C in a dishwasher or second sink). Detergent: a chemical used in cleaning to remove food debris and grease. Disinfectant: a chemical used for disinfection. Cleaning and disinfection generally consists of six steps: a. Pre-clean - remove excess food waste by sweeping, wiping or pre-rinsing b. Main clean - loosen surface waste and grease using a detergent. c. Rinse - remove loose food waste, grease and detergent. d. Disinfection - kill the bacteria with disinfectant or heat.

e. Final rinse - remove the disinfectant. (FYI: Caviwipes and Bleachwipes do not require removal from a surface.) f. Drying - remove all moisture. Critical Steps: 1. Enter room. Wash your hands or gel in. Bring your supplies with you. 2. Don clean gloves. 3. Remove previous food debris (this is pre-cleaning, cleaning, and rinsing). Wash/scrub surface with paper towel, soap, water. Get new, wet paper towel and rinse/scrub surface. Dry surface with clean paper towel. 4. With same gloves still on, wipe/scrub surface with a Caviwipe or bleach wipe (this is disinfection). 5. Allow the surface to AIR DRY or wait for the "kill/contact" time on the label before manually drying (this is the "drying step"). 6. Remove clean gloves. 7. Get your trash can close to your work surface and at your side.

8. Wash hands with soap and water, do not use hand gel this time. 9. Set up your sterile field [see video demonstration, click on "Setting Up a Sterile Field: Critical Steps" above]. Assist provider with procedure. 10. Wash hands, perform 5Ps, and document. You must be able to perform this skill without any coaching or verbal prompting.
