WORD FORMATION
Is the method by which words are formed.
BORROWING
Borrowing is talking about words from other languages. Many languages borrow from English.
Today's English is also one of the main donor languages, the main source of loans for many other languages. (RICHARD NORDQUIST 2019)
EXAMPLES
Ketchup (CHINESE) Opera, spaghetti, macaroni (Italian) Hamburger - iceberg (german) karaoke tsunami sushi origami karate (Japanese) Yoga Shampo (indian) Yogurt (turkish) Sandwich (English)
COMPOUNDING
When we use compounding, we link together two or more bases to create a new word. Normally, the first item identifies a key feature of the second word
Open Compound Words
Ice cream (helado) Post office (oficina de correos) Middle Class (clase media)
Closed Compound Words
Notebook (Cuaderno) Fireworks (fuegos artificiales) Sunflower (girasol)
Hyphenated compound words
In general, these words are adjectives, that is, they serve to qualify a noun. But it is clear that there are exceptions, such as“son-in-law”.
