What is Reggae?

Reggae origin

The definition of Reggae

Reggae is a style of music that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. By the 1970s, it had become an international style that was particularly popular in Britain, the United States, Brazil, and Africa. It was widely known as the voice of the oppressed.

Reggae origin

Reggae developed from ska and rocksteady in the 1960s. American R&B also influenced it.Toots Hibbert named it Reggae. The earliest Reggae lyrics were generally about love, specifically romantic love between a man and a woman. In the 1970s, Reggae started taking on a heavy Rastafarian influence.

Reggae Lovers

The love sang in Reggae was not just romantic, but cosmic and spiritual, the love of a person and Jah (the Rastafarian name of God). When Reggae singers are not singing about love, they're singing about revolution against extreme violence, poverty, racism, and government oppression.
